Red Deer city council immunization policy repealed

Mar 29, 2022 | 9:49 AM

Red Deer city council withdrew their immunization policy at Monday’s meeting.

On Jan. 31, council implemented an immunization policy on members. The policy entailed providing proof of double vaccination or a negative rapid antigen test within 72 hours of attending an in-person event.

The policy was set to be reviewed in 90 days, or on April 25.

However, on March 17, following provincial removal of the Restrictions Exemption Program, The City suspended the immunization policy set on City employees. An Agenda Review Committee requested the same for the policy on council.

Council had the following options:

  • Review the policy at the original 90-day mark
  • Amend the immunization policy bylaw
  • Create a bylaw to repeal the immunization policy bylaw

“The whole rationale behind it, or one of the rationales, was about to be consistent. That we didn’t look like we were treating staff differently than we were treating council. The immunization rules have been suspended for that and the way where we are right now, procedurally, that we can closest mirror that would be to repeal the bylaw,” said Councillor Michael Dawe.

Council unanimously voted to repeal the immunization policy bylaw.
