Dream Home Lottery Winner: Where are they now?

Feb 17, 2022 | 1:42 PM

Sometimes in life, you really do get what you give.

After donating to the Red Deer Kinsmen for their Dream Home Lottery, local Denise Sidloski won the grand prize home, a new 2,368 square foot bungalow located on 26 Tillier Street.

“I had just come home from the hospital,” Sidloski recounted. “When I heard it, it was just like, it didn’t matter what happened. I had to go down there and go see this for myself.”

The Kinsmen broke the news to the Dream Home winner on a live video found on their Facebook page.

“This day in age when you go to someone’s house, in a group, we’re just lucky they answered the door,” said Ken Waters, 2021 Lottery Chair.

“She came back to the house that night with her family and got to take a look at it. That was very exciting; that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”

This year’s home had three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a den with a 10’ tray ceiling, faux beams and gas fireplace with a waterfall hearth. The kitchen included stainless-steel appliances, a large Quartz Island and a barn door to a walk-in pantry. Finally, the basement had a custom wet bar, wine room, family room and corner lounge area.

Sidloski and her three children had always bought a Kinsmen lottery ticket but this was the first year her children didn’t.

Having gone through past struggles and lacking in support, Sidloski says she believes firmly in donating wherever she can.

“I was a single mom for many years so I know how hard it is,” she said tearing up.

Whether by making food baskets at Thanksgiving for those in need or buying a charity lottery ticket, Sidloski says it’s important to help one another, without thinking of what is received in return.

“I don’t want to be appreciated for it; I just do it. I don’t want them to know who I am,” she said.

Now living with her long-time partner Doug, her current three garage home was originally purchased for their three cars, two Harley Davidson motorcycles and an RV.

Recently placing that house up for sale, Sidloski admits she would like to downsize as taking care of a large house gets harder with age. The Kinsmen Dream Home also has her “dream kitchen” with its open concept, ideal for cooking and hosting gatherings which this winner loves to do. Another idea in the works is to sell the Tillier house to purchase the couple’s dream home together.

Either way, Sidloski doesn’t plan on letting the win change her goals of helping others, as she works for Helping Hands, a home health care service.

“One of my clients heard that I won the dream home, so when I went to his house, he asked what I was doing there. I said, ‘I love my job!’” she described.

Over 100 other winners were also drawn on Feb. 4. The main winners for the cash prizes are the following:

  • 50/50 Draw Cash Prize – $157,395.00: Ivan Humphrey, Eckville
  • Early Bird #1 Cash – $10,000: Morgan Burdek, Spruce Grove
  • Early Bird #2 Cash – $25,000: Frank Nobel, Lacombe
  • Loyalty Cash – $15,000 : Douglas Heath, Edmonton

For their 40th anniversary celebration, the Kinsmen also offered a variety of extra prizes for participants, including trips to Europe, cooking classes, helicopter rides, home gym equipment, among others.

The volunteer-run charity organization normally runs the lottery from October to December, with this year’s initial deadline scheduled for Dec. 31. However, resulting from pandemic difficulties, not enough tickets were sold for the club to profit for their community initiatives such as donations to local organizations, construction projects and more.

With a one-month deadline extension to January 31, 2022, the Kinsmen were able to raise enough for this year’s charity work.

The Kinsmen are already planning for their 2022 Dream Home Lottery this fall.
