The Red Deer Rebels squeaked by the Hurricanes in Lethbridge Friday night, picking up a 3-2 overtime win at the Enmax Centre, their second overtime victory this week.

Previously, the Rebels edged Calgary 4-3 in extra time at the Peavey Mart Centrium on Sunday.

The first period on Friday, however, put the Rebels in the lead when Arshdeep Bains scored his 11th goal of the season on goalie Bryan Thomson at the 6:26 mark. The goal came on the power play with the Hurricane’s Logan Barlage in the box for a hooking penalty. The Rebels’ Kai Uchacz and Blake Stevenson assisted on the play.

Lethbridge caught up at the 13:07 mark when Noah Boyko scored his ninth goal of the season on netminder Connor Ungar, assisted by Chase Wheatcroft and Alex Thacker. The score now tied, the Hurricanes quickly surpassed the Rebels with Alex Thacker not only winning the faceoff but scoring his fifth goal of the season, unassisted.

After 20 minutes of play, the scoreboard read 2-1 in favour of the Hurricanes with the Rebels outshooting Lethbridge 18-8.

The second period brought the Rebels back on track though with Dallon Melin making his debut goal of the season at the 9:12 mark with some help from Blake Gustafson.

Tied once again 2-2, the period ended with shots on goal in favour of the Hurricanes 9-5.

The final period brought multiple power play opportunities for both teams but saw no goals and Lethbridge outshooting Red Deer 12-11.

Moving into overtime, Red Deer outshot Lethbridge 5-1 and to their success. Kalan Lind scored his sixth goal of the season unassisted at just under five minutes, winning the game 3-2.

The Hurricanes went 0/3 in power plays, while the Rebels went 1/6 with the man advantage.

The three stars of the game were awarded to Lethbridge players, Miguel Marques in third, Bryan Thomson in second, and Alex Thacker with the game’s first star.

The win brings the Rebels’ record up to 17-9-1, keeping them in second place in the WHL’s Central Division. The loss for the Hurricanes, however, drops their record to fifth place with a record of 10-11-2.

The Rebels are back on home ice Saturday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium to play host to the Medicine Hat Tigers at 7 p.m.
