The Red Deer Rebels took their 8-4-1 record into the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg Thursday night, but suffered a 4-1 loss to the league-leading Ice sporting a 12-1-0 record heading into the contest.

Although the Rebels had more puck control in the first period, outshooting the Ice 14-11, Winnipeg exhibited their first-place ranking by scoring the initial goal. At the 13:02 mark, Connor McClennon scored on goaltender Chase Coward, his 11th goal of the season and unassisted.

The period ended without any power plays by the 20-minute buzzer.

The second period was swiftly avenged by the Rebels, with Blake Stevenson scoring the game tying goal and his sixth of the season on netminder Daniel Hauser after just three and a half minutes of play. Hunter Mayo picked up the assist on the play.

However, Winnipeg mirrored the goal at the final three minute mark of the period, with Mikey Milne scoring his 10th of the season, assisted by Carson Lambos and Zachary Benson. The ICE were leading 23-19 in shots on goal after two periods and capitalized once on four power play opportunities, while the Rebels went 0/1.

The final period was all Winnipeg though. At the 6:32 mark, Carson Lambos scored his fourth goal of the season with help from Zachary Benson and Conor Geekie, extending their lead to 3-1. The at 13:41, Chase Bertholet pushed the score to 4-1 with his sixth goal of the season, assisted by Owen Boucher.

By game’s end, Winnipeg outshot Red Deer 34-32. Meanwhile, the Ice went 1/6 on the power play while the Rebels went 0/3 with the man advantage.

Winnipeg’s Daniel Hauser was named the game’s third star, Chase Bertholet the second, and Carson Lambos received the first star for his goal and assist in the game.

Tonight’s battle puts the Rebels’ record to 8-5-1 and that of the ICE to 13-1-0, keeping their rankings steady at second and first place in their respective divisions.

The Rebels will stay in Manitoba though as they head to Brandon next to battle the Wheat Kings. Puck drop at Westoba Place on Friday, Nov. 5 is at 7 p.m. CDT (6 p.m. MT).
