2021 Red Deer Reads final event with author Desmond Cole

Red Deer Public Library is thrilled to host author Desmond Cole, our 2021 Red Deer Reads Community Book Club winner, on October 21 at 6:30 p.m. for a virtual author event.

Desmond will speak about his book, The Skin We’re In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power, and will be joined by Dieulita Datus, co-founder of Ubuntu: Mobilizing Central Alberta, who championed Desmond’s book online.

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s Red Deer Reads main event will take place virtually, streaming live on Red Deer Public Library’s Facebook page at facebook.com/reddeerpubliclibrary.

Members of the public will be able to watch the event on Facebook even if they do not have a Facebook account. The recording will also be made available on the library’s YouTube channel the following day.

Red Deer Reads: An Evening with Desmond Cole

Thursday, October 21, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Red Deer Public Library will proudly host author Desmond Cole for the final Red Deer Reads author event, where he will speak about his book and his experiences.

We invite members of the public to submit questions for Desmond by email to programs@rdpl.org, in person at any branch, or in the comments section of the live streamed video as it is airing. Those who submit a question will be entered to win a signed copy of The Skin We’re In.

About Red Deer Reads:

Red Deer Reads is a city-wide initiative designed to bring Red Deerians together through a shared reading experience. It is an opportunity for the entire community to connect and have engaging conversations about a particular book, its author, and the themes and ideas within the book. As part of the program, Red Deer Public Library hosts the winning author for a celebratory event and invites the community to take part in an engaging presentation from the author about their book.

This year, RDPL staff selected three shortlisted titles for the Red Deer Reads program. Red Deerians were invited to read each of the finalists and vote on the title that they think everyone in Red Deer should read. Each book was championed by a local representative who felt passionately about their title, encouraging Red Deerians to read and vote for their pick.

The Book Champions also took part in a series of virtual events this summer, where they were joined by the authors themselves to pitch their book to the community. After a close battle, The Skin We’re In by Desmond Cole was revealed as the 2021 Red Deer Reads winner.
