Red Deer woman arrested in death of missing Grande Prairie man

Oct 20, 2021 | 1:56 PM

A Red Deer woman has been arrested in connection with the death of a Grande Prairie man reported missing earlier this year.

As a result of further investigation and the results of an autopsy in March 2021, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes identified human remains as belonging to missing person, Tyler Johnson, a 26-year-old male from Grande Prairie.

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes’ investigation into the circumstances surrounding Johnson’s death led Mounties to obtaining an arrest warrant for Brianna Ruf-Dietz, 32, of Red Deer, for the murder of Tyler Johnson.

On Oct. 12, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes, along with the assistance of Maskwacis RCMP and the Edmonton Police Service, arrested Ruf-Dietz in Edmonton.

Following a judicial hearing, Ruf-Dietz was remanded into custody, with her next scheduled court appearance in Wetaskiwin provincial court Oct. 26.

As this matter is now before the courts, police say no further information can be provided.

On Mar. 10, 2021, an investigation led the RCMP Major Crimes Unit (MCU) to locate human remains on Mar. 8, in a house that recently burned to the ground near Maskwacis.

MCU Investigators were assisted by Maskwacis RCMP, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, an anthropologist, and an RCMP Police Dog Services member from St. Paul, who used a human remains detection dog.

Firestorm Consulting Group was contracted and assisted RCMP with the origin and cause of the house fire.
