Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics Recap

Oct 3, 2021 | 4:32 PM

This past weekend, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Soccer teams were undefeated on the pitch.

One talented, central Alberta student-athlete made Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Soccer history, setting the record for the most goals in a single game.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team had a remarkable effort at Running Room Grand Prix #2.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week:

Queens Soccer | Friday, October 1 | RDP Main Field

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team dominated the Ambrose University Lions 22-0. Lacombe’s Jenica Swartz totaled 11 goals, smashing the previous record of seven goals scored in one ACAC Women’s Soccer game. For her outstanding effort, Swartz was named the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game.

“I am really excited about the record,” said Swartz. “I feel it is a big accomplishment, but it couldn’t have happened without all my teammates supporting me.”

Both Reesa Garez and Alisha Coules contributed a hat trick for Red Deer Polytechnic. Paige Kalbfleisch, a first-year Bachelor of Science Nursing student, scored twice. Sofia Quinteros, Grace Smith, and Jaden Humphrey added one goal each in the home victory.

Both Alisha Coules and Sofia Quinteros scored twice. Sherwood Park’s Paige Kalbfleisch capped off the Queens’ scoring in the 80th minute.

Kings Soccer – Friday, October 1 – Ambrose University Lions

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer team received contributions from the entire lineup Friday afternoon against the Ambrose University Lions.

With strong defensive play and eight different scorers, including a three-goal performance from forward Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto, the RDP Kings picked up a convincing 10-0 win over the visitors.

“I thought Ambrose came out pretty well at the beginning,” said Gerald Grobmeier, Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer Head Coach. “They had an early chance that could have put us under pressure, but our keeper Jared made a big save.”

In the 14th minute, Red Deer Polytechnic Kings first-year defender Wataru Oguchi opened the scoring.

Teammates Masoum Zaher and Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto added goals throughout the first half, putting the home team up 3-0 at the break.

“We got the first goal and the second and third started coming, and you could see the game started to get more difficult for Ambrose,” said Grobmeier. “It started opening up for our guys and the pace that they played, especially in the second half, Ambrose was having difficulty keeping up with that.”

Over the final 45 minutes, Kirk Moody, Isaiah Albright, Gabriel Fleury de Queiroz, Thomson Wellie and Hayden Jacobs added goals. Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto, a Kinesiology Fitness and Health student, picked up a pair, helping the Kings seal a 10-0 decision.

Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto was selected as the North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game. The third-year forward from Brazil led Red Deer Polytechnic with three goals over 77 minutes.

“Pedro scored some very important goals for us. Even though it was 3-0, it was a goal that started to put the game away in our favour,” said Grobmeier. “He is very strong on the ball. He turns very well and is always looking to score. I know he was a bit disappointed – he felt that he could have scored more today, but a hat trick is pretty good in soccer.”

Nathan Yeung, a first-year Biology student from Nanaimo, earned the award for the Lions, playing a solid game on defence.

Lions goalkeeper Dayton Mcleay made four saves. Jared St Thomas, a Kinesiology Fitness and Health student, had to make only one save in the Kings’ net, but it was timely.

The first place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (3-0-1) will host the second seed SAIT Trojans (3-0-0) on Friday, Oct. 8 at 4 pm. After that contest, the King will have one game remaining against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (1-2-0).

The top six teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs.

Cross Country Grand Prix # 2 – Saturday, October 2

Competing against the top racers across the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), the Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team proved that it is a force to be reckoned with in 2021.

At Running Room Grand Prix #2, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens won the combined team trophy, which considered the top three times from each squad.

As separate teams, the RDP Kings finished second and the Queens sealed third. The Kings’ outstanding effort was even more significant as they were without the services of talented student-athlete Daniel Szucs.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Lethbridge College Kodiaks were tied for top spot with 40 team points, but the Kodiaks edged out the Kings in a tie breaker. Lethbridge College’s fourth place runner finished one position ahead of Red Deer Polytechnic’s fourth place competitor.

The SAIT Trojans Men’s team wrapped up third (52 points).

Red Deer’s Devin Saunders (29:52) led the way for the Kings over 8 km, finishing sixth among ACAC male runners. Jayden Wildcat (29:52), a first-year student-athlete from Maskwacis, had another impressive race, trailing Saunders by a hair for seventh spot. Red Deer’s Ethan Duret (31:08), a first-year Bachelor of Commerce student, took 11th among ACAC men. Axsivier Lawrence (33:26) was 16th in the conference.

Concordia University’s Leonard Chesoo (26:02) was first, eclipsing second place Yahye Jama (27:37), from SAIT, by one minute thirty-five seconds. Chesoo’s teammate Brandon Toal (28:01) wrapped up third.

First-year Jenica Swartz (25:36) paced the Queens, placing second among ACAC female runners. Swartz had a tremendous weekend competing for Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics. On Friday, Swartz set the ACAC Women’s Soccer goal scoring record with 11 in one game.

Then after running 6 km on Saturday, she joined the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team for the second half in their 8-1 win against the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings. RDP’s Justine Larson (27:17) was seventh in the ACAC. Captain Lauren Pasiuk (28:41), a Bachelor of Science Nursing student, finished 14th and teammate Myah Cota (28:57) followed in 15th.

The Concordia University Thunder Women’s team solidified first with 29 team points. The University of Alberta Augustana Vikings were second (32 points). The RDP Queens accumulated 38 points in a third place effort.

Augustana’s Reese Bendiksen (24:39) led the ACAC women. After Swartz, St. Mary’s University’s Maria Fox (25:53) took third.

St. Mary’s University will host Running Room Grand Prix #3 on Saturday, October 16 at 2 pm.
