Soccer stars shine bright as RDP Athletes of the Week

Sep 28, 2021 | 12:12 PM

Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics is proud to announce the RDP Athletes of the Week for Sept. 27, 2021.

Jenica Swartz – Queens Soccer

Hometown – Lacombe, AB

Bachelor of Science Pre-Professional – Medicine (1st year)

Jenica Swartz delivered an efficient and productive performance in the RDP Queens Soccer team’s 5-0 victory against the visiting Olds College Broncos this past Sunday. In only 45 minutes played, the first-year forward had four shots on goal, accumulating two goals and one assist. The Bachelor of Science Pre-Professional – Medicine student pushed the pace and constantly pressured the Broncos’ back four. For her outstanding effort, Swartz was named the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game. The talented student-athlete also competes on the RDP Cross Country Running team.

Wataru Oguchi – Kings Soccer

Hometown – Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Japan

Academic Upgrading (1st year)

Frequently, offensive players receive the most recognition, but RDP Kings Soccer defender Wataru Oguchi made significant contributions in his team’s win and tie against the Olds College Broncos this past weekend. The first-year was rock solid and played sound positionally, helping the Kings to limit the Broncos to only one goal over two games. The tenacious student-athlete from Japan displayed a tremendous work ethic, playing the entire 90 minutes in both Saturday and Sunday’s games. Oguchi, an Academic Upgrading student, also helped effectively transition the ball up the field to give his teammates an opportunity to ignite their high powered offence, which scored six goals over two games. Oguchi’s consistent play was praised by Kings coaches, and he has made an impact as a positive and admired member of the RDP Kings Soccer program in a short amount of time.

This Week in Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics

On Friday, the RDP Kings and Queens Soccer teams will host the Ambrose University Lions. The RDP Queens Soccer team will also play the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in Camrose on Saturday.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team will compete in Running Room Grand Prix #2.

Here is a summary of what is happening this week:

Queens Soccer | Friday, October 1 | 3 pm | RDP Main Field

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team (1-1-0) will challenge the Ambrose University Lions(0-3-0) at home in their third game of the six game regular season.

Over two games, the Queens have averaged 2.5 goals per game. Five student-athletes have contributed a goal or an assist.

The top six teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs. Even though the RDP Queens have played the least number of games in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Soccer South Division, they sit fifth.

Queens Soccer | Saturday, October 2 | 2 pm | U of A Augustana

The Queens (1-1-0) will travel to Camrose and take on the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings(0-3-0) in an afternoon contest.

Kings Soccer | Friday, October 1 | 5 pm | RDP Main Field

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer team (2-0-1) will host the Ambrose University Lions (0-3-0).

The Kings are first in the ACAC Men’s Soccer South Division with seven points. The top six teams from each division will qualify for the postseason.

Over three games, the RDP Kings have scored 11 goals and have allowed only two.

Cross Country Running | Grand Prix #2 | Saturday, October 2 | U of A Augustana

In Camrose, the Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team will participate in Running Room Grand Prix #2, which could see a broader field of ACAC runners competing than the first grand prix. Running Room Grand Prix #1 was separated into north and south competitions.

The Kings and Queens will look to build upon their successes from Running Room Grand Prix #1 (North) in Edmonton on September 18, when the RDP Kings earned first place and the Queens were third.

Along with some impressive individual races from veteran members of the team, which included Daniel Szucs finishing third and Devin Saunders placing fourth individually, several first-year student-athletes performed extremely well in their first conference race.

Over 8 km, newcomer Jayden Wildcat (33:23) placed fifth and was an important member of the Kings’ top placement. First-year Justine Larson (29:53) led the Queens and finished third overall among ACAC female runners over 6 km.
