Red Deer court briefs: Sept. 9

Sep 9, 2021 | 10:49 AM

Trial dates have been set for a Red Deer man accused of committing sexual offences against a 15-year-old youth.

Brandon Thomas Conlin, 31, is scheduled for trial in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench from Nov. 15-19, 2021.

His trial dates were set following a preliminary hearing July 29, which determined his case had enough evidence to go to trial.

Conlin is charged with sexual interference, sexual assault, possession of child pornography, and luring a child.

After receiving a complaint from a concerned parent, a Red Deer RCMP investigation last year determined that a 30-year-old man had allegedly lured and committed sexual offences against a 15-year-old.

The specialized Red Deer RCMP Sex Crime Unit executed a search warrant and arrested the suspect on July 31, 2020.

Created in July 2020, Mounties say the Red Deer Sex Crime Unit works collaboratively with a number of local agencies to provide victim-focused service to survivors of sexual violence.

A Ponoka man charged in a string of stolen vehicles and other crimes throughout central Alberta last year has been sentenced to 19 months in jail.

Cody Alan Feil, 33, was convicted in Rocky Mountain House provincial court Aug. 25 on 22 counts, and was also ordered to pay $30,839 in restitution to his multiple victims in the Aug. 25, 2020 incidents. In addition, Feil was also given a 10-year driving prohibition, while 14 other charges were withdrawn.

It was about 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2020 when Bashaw RCMP were called after someone spotted a pick-up truck stolen out of Ponoka County.

Police were told the driver of the vehicle had apparently stolen a firearm and wallet from an unlocked vehicle in Camrose County.

The suspect travelled through several jurisdictions, abandoning the original stolen truck and stealing several other unlocked pick-ups, which police say had been left with keys in the ignition.

RCMP Air Services, Police Dog Services and the Emergency Response Team were called in to assist with the pursuit. Police lost track of the suspect when their helicopter had to stop to refuel and were unable to locate him again that day.

The suspect was eventually identified and arrested at his home on the evening of Aug. 26, 2020.

RCMP said they recovered a total of nine stolen vehicles involved in the incident.

Cody Alan Feil, was also wanted on five outstanding warrants from various jurisdictions at the time of his arrest.

In September 2018, Feil was sentenced to eight months in jail and given a three-year driving ban after being convicted in connection to an incident in Red Deer that June in which he rammed a stolen truck into a police cruiser.

One of two people charged in a carjacking and assault near Sylvan Lake two years ago has been sentenced to 36 months in jail.

Chelsea Area Crowley, 29, was convicted on three counts in Red Deer provincial court Aug. 27, including possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, robbery, and breaching conditions of a recognizance. Twelve other charges against her were withdrawn.

The global sentence imposed was 1,620 days, less 565 days of pre-trial custody for a total of 1,055 days behind bars.

It was just before 9 a.m. on Oct. 23, 2019 when Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a rural property where two women had been dropped off by a man driving a stolen truck.

One of the owners of the rural property drove out to where the women were hiding in a ditch when one of them pulled her from her vehicle and began punching, kicking and threatening her while pointing a firearm at her face.

The suspects fled in the victim’s vehicle to Red Deer where they crashed into multiple vehicles in the city before being arrested.

Co-accused Brianna Crookedlegs, now 22, faces nine charges stemming from the incident, including robbery and eight firearms-related counts.

A warrant for arrest issued for Crookedlegs in August 2020 remains outstanding.
