Second health clinic gives Blackfalds residents more local choice

A second health clinic opens this week in Blackfalds, lessening the growing community’s shortfall of medical services.

Apollo Health Centre will welcome its first patients on Sept. 6. — starting with people 60 and over — at 5001 Aspen Lakes Blvd., meaning fewer families will have to seek health care outside the community of just over 11,000. Other families will start being served Sept. 7.

Last year, Blackfalds town council, along with administration and community members, struck the Blackfalds Health Practitioners Attraction and Retention Committee (BHPARC). The group took various steps to attract health organizations and doctors to the town.

“To assist with recruitment and retention, we have teamed up with BHPARC who are diligently helping us with recruitment,” explained Dr. Muti Kauchali, the clinic’s founder. “They have set up some incentives for doctors to move into Blackfalds as part of the retention plan.”

New patients can now pick up registration forms at the clinic.

BHPARC member and town councillor Rebecca Stendie says the clinic’s opening is exciting to see given how much she’s advocated for the cause since becoming a council member.

“Being able to access healthcare services in your home community in a timely fashion is something every community strives to be able to provide, and this new clinic/pharmacy is a welcome addition for Blackfalds,” she added.

“I’m thrilled to have been a part of the team that is the BHPARC. It always amazes me how well our community pulls together to get things done when they see a need, and this was definitely a need.”

The clinic will operate Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kauchali will be the primary practitioner on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, plus some Saturdays. Locum doctors will assist on the other days. Doctors interested in joining the team are encouraged to contact Kauchali.
