COVID cases continue to rise in Red Deer

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer continues to climb.

Over the past three days, 53 new cases have been identified in the city, bringing the total number of active cases in Red Deer now to 199. Recoveries total 5,819 – up 13 from Thursday.

The number of coronavirus cases attributed to the community since the start of the pandemic is 6,061 – up 66 since Thursday. The number of deaths meanwhile, remains at 43, with the last one reported July 6.

The Central Zone as a whole has 765 active cases as of Monday, up 178 from Thursday. There are 24 hospitalizations, down one, with four people receiving intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the same as Friday. The Central Zone has had 175 deaths linked to COVID-19, with none reported today.

PROVINCIAL NUMBERS

Across Alberta, another 1,972 new cases of COVID-19 were announced on Monday, for an average of 657 new cases per day over the past three days (821 Aug. 20, 678 Aug. 21, 473 Aug. 22).

That’s out of 22,952 tests completed, and a test positivity rate of roughly 8.6 per cent during that time.

Active cases across the province are up 1,068 to 7,777.

Of the active cases, 6,228 are variants of concern, or 80.1 per cent. (Variant case numbers are not updated daily like most other data)

There are 244 Albertans hospitalized due to the virus, up 23, including 54 in intensive care, up six. Of the 190 non-ICU patients, 82.1 per cent are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 54 in ICU, 96.4 per cent are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

The province’s death toll is now listed as 2,348, up five from Thursday.

There are currently 2,438 active cases of COVID-19 in the Calgary Zone, 2,408 in the Edmonton Zone, 1,158 in the North Zone, 984 in the South Zone, and 24 other cases in unconfirmed locations.

VACCINATIONS

On the vaccine front, Alberta has now administered 5,495,479 doses as of Aug. 22.

As a result, 77.3 per cent of Albertans aged 12+ now have at least one dose, while 68.8 per cent of Albertans aged 12+ are now fully vaccinated.
