Soccer victory to have ripple effect on generations
Team Canada’s monumental and historic win this week in women’s soccer will undoubtedly have ripple effects on generations of young people to come.
Canada beat Sweden 3-2 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw after extra time to win the gold medal in Tokyo on Friday in nail-biting fashion.
John Leslie, a coach with Red Deer City Soccer, and the association’s house and technical operations director, says it was appointment viewing for his entire family, despite the 6 a.m. start time.
“As a coach of a girls soccer team and having two daughters myself, it’s massive. Having followed the women’s game for a number of years, seeing the mentorship, the evolution, and passing of the torch from Christine Sinclair and Stephanie Labbé to players like Jessie Fleming and Jordyn Huitema, has been amazing,” he says.
