Eight safety presentations

Hundreds of Grade 5 students attend Lacombe County Farm Safety Day

Farm safety was front and centre today for approximately 350 Grade 5 students in Lacombe County.

On Wednesday, the county held its annual Farm Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where the students from 11 different local schools rotated through eight safety presentations.

Jalene Makus, Lacombe County agriculture coordinator, said farm safety is now a part of the curriculum for the students and a top priority for the county.

“This is a perfect fit for their curriculum, learning about the farm and the safety aspects. We feel that whether the kids are from a farm or from town, it’s important for both to know about the hazards,” she said.

Among the presentations provided to the students were fire safety, ATV safety, grain safety, lawn mower safety, heavy equipment/blindspot safety, post pounder safety, chemical safety, and sun safety.

“Some of the presentations are hits from year to year, like the post pounder safety, where smash melons and hot dogs are used as fingers. It’s a good visual for the kids,” Makus said. “We pick them based on what we feel is important.”

She said the idea is to make it easier for kids to understand through visuals and hands-on learning.

“Learning from people who are actually in the industry, such as farmers, makes a huge difference,” she added.

“We are happy to do it every year, and we specifically invite Grade 5’s from in and around Lacombe County and now that it’s built in their curriculum, hopefully generations of kids will get the safety training in this community.”
