Metal fest returns to Drumheller over long weekend

Jul 28, 2021 | 3:11 PM

The Loud As Hell metal fest goes this long weekend in Drumheller, and is sure to bring the noise.

Bands, including Red Deer’s own The Myopia Condition and Obsidius, will take the stage July 30 and Aug. 1 at Dinosaur Downs Stampede Grounds.

Robert Fearey, The Myopia Condition member, says the band is thrilled to return to the stage after a year and a half off due to the pandemic.

“We released an album at that time (when the pandemic began), so it’ll be amazing to finally get to perform it and a bunch of new tracks. The whole situation just shows the things we take for granted like performing live or even just simply being a member of the crowd. We are also lucky enough to play Loud As Hell for our first show back and of course to a hungry crowd that’s been itching for a good live metal experience,” he says.

“All of us in the band are pretty passionate about our craft and have been having a tough time coping with not being able to play combined with the stress of these uncertain times, so to be back in the saddle is the ultimate blessing. It’s also great that we don’t even have to journey too far from home to get to play this amazing festival. We plan to throw down like never before and celebrate being able to finally do this again.”

Festival organizer Geoff Bourrie says the atmosphere is sure to be electric and even uplifting.

“We feel the impact will be like nothing we have ever seen. We are providing a platform at this event that will shake through the metal music scene like an earthquake. We are ready to ignite the western Canada heavy music scene,” he says.

“This is something everyone can enjoy. In addition to the many different styles of heavy music through-out the weekend, we are located in the Badlands of Drumheller. It’s a great place to visit that has all types of dinosaur fun for the whole family. The festival is all-ages!”

If you plan on attending, bring water, dry clothes, sunscreen, bug spray and other weather appropriate attire.

Aside from the music (40+ bands performing), there are burlesque shows, solo artists, and acoustic performances. There is also on-site camping, vendors and food trucks, as well as free pancake breakfast Saturday and Sunday.

“We have increased our viewing area to allow for social distancing for those that want to have space,” Bourrie adds. “We have added many separate seating areas that will allow for further social distancing. We have increased our sanitizer stations around the grounds. We are fully ready for a safe and super fun event.”
