The Red Deer Rebels have added an important piece to their coaching staff.

Owner, President and General Manager Brent Sutter announced this week that Ian Gordon is the team’s new Director of Goaltending.

Gordon comes to the Rebels after eight seasons with the Seattle Thunderbirds.

A native of North Battleford, SK, Gordon has also spent time as a goalie coach with Hockey Canada’s U17 program. He also owns and operates Ian Gordon Goaltending in Edmonton.

“With Ian’s experience working with young prospects and experienced goaltenders in our league, we’re excited to add him to our coaching and scouting staff,” said Sutter.

Gordon played in the WHL himself, from 1992-95 with the Swift Current Broncos, winning a league title and competing at the 1993 Memorial Cup with Saskatoon.

Gordon also attended Chicago Blackhawks camp and signed with the Calgary Flames in 1995 before playing two years in the AHL, and three more in the IHL with Grand Rapids.

He also played overseas for 13 years in the German Elite League, then retired in 2013 as that league’s all-time leader in goalie games played and shutouts. He won a league title with the Frankfurt Lions in 2003.
