Rebels name new play-by-play announcer

Jun 10, 2021 | 12:44 PM

There’s officially a new man behind the mic for the Red Deer Rebels.

The Rebels have announced the hiring of Troy Gillard in the role of Director, Broadcasts and Media. Gillard will manage the hockey club’s play-by-play duties, communications, public relations, and digital content.

A native of Clive, AB, Gillard has been the News/Sports Director at Pattison Media (106.7 REWIND Radio/BIG 105/rdnewsNOW) since 2012 and for much of that time has appeared as the full-time host of Alberta Ram Dealers Rebels Hockey on 106.7 REWIND Radio. He previously served as the team’s public address announcer for four seasons.

Aside from the shortened 23-game 2021 Rebels season, Gillard has broadcast games for the Allan Cup, Telus Cup and Alberta Cup.

“I want to thank Bryn James and our partners at Pattison Media for their endorsement and support of Troy pursuing this opportunity,” said Rebels Owner, President and General Manager Sutter. “Troy has been a staple on our broadcasts for nearly a decade, and did a good job under unique circumstances this past season. He’s a local guy, with deep sporting connections in Central Alberta, and is very deserving of this opportunity. We know he’s eager to grow in the role and expand the team’s digital media offerings.”

“I could not be more thrilled to be joining the Rebels organization on a full-time basis,” Gillard shared. “Calling games this past season was truly an honour and I’m incredibly grateful that Brent and Merrick (Sutter) are entrusting me to continue doing it. I also look forward to helping strengthen and grow the Rebels brand and presence in the community.

“This opportunity would not be possible without the support of my family,” he added. “On behalf of them I want thank the Rebels for this opportunity and I look forward to many great years to come.”

Cam Moon, the team’s previous broadcaster for 22 seasons, joined the Edmonton Oilers in January as their radio play-by-play voice. Gillard will join the Rebels full-time in early July.
