Videos spotlight Clearwater County seniors from June 7-13

Jun 5, 2021 | 11:42 AM

Like many communities, Clearwater County is marking Seniors’ Week starting June 7, along with the Government of Alberta.

Arlene Como, a Seniors Social Needs Coordinator in Clearwater County, says seniors contribute a significant amount to the fabric of the community.

“They are such a wealth of experience and wisdom, and so pleasurable to be around. I’m privileged to work with them,” says Como. “We did this video project where I met over 20 local seniors and we interviewed them for a few minutes each because they have so many stories to share.”

Como is hopeful people of all ages will take a few minutes to watch the videos as they’re shared on social media throughout the week.

“Younger people should watch them and soak up all the advice the participants shared. They were tickled pink to participate too,” she says. “It would do them some honour to give up a few minutes of our attention.”

Four videos will be posted each day, including on the Clearwater Regional FCSS Facebook page.

Each day this week, local seniors and elders – as long as you identify as one — can enjoy the following free offerings:

Monday – Coffee at A&W – 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Tuesday – Timbits and coffee at Tim Horton’s – 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Wednesday – Ice cream at Dairy Queen – 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Thursday – Fries and coffee at McDonald’s – 11 a.m – 4 p.m.

Friday – Drive-in BBQ sponsored by A&W, and drive-by car show by Western Wheels Auto Club at Asokewin Friendship Centre (4917 52nd Street, Rocky Mountain House) – 1-3 p.m. >> Attendees are encouraged to register for this so organizers can estimate numbers. To do so, call 403-895-2763.

There will also be draws at each location, all of which are in Rocky Mountain House.

Seniors’ Week in Clearwater County is also supported by the Westview Lodge, Pioneer Centre, Clearwater Regional FCSS, the Leslieville Community Centre, and Condor Community Hall.

Como notes the planning committee had many other activities in the works, including a cosmetology class, a postcard class and live music, however they had to be shelved due to COVID-19.

The Town of Rocky Mountain House and town council declared Seniors’ Week last month in alignment with the provincial week June 7-13.

“We are all eager to enjoy Seniors’ Week, and we will do so safely and according to public health guidelines. As we start to see the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, thank you to the many seniors who have bravely endured this difficult time with grace and fortitude,” says Josephine Pon, Seniors and Housing Minister. “I say it all the time – seniors are the strength of Alberta.”
