Red Deer up to 858 active COVID-19 cases

After declining for each of the past three days, the active COVID-19 case count in Red Deer was up on Wednesday.

The latest numbers from the province show the city with 858 active cases, an increase of 41 over the past 24 hours.

Recoveries are up 34 to 4,216 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to Red Deer rose 75 to 5,112.

Red Deer’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 remains 38.

The Central Zone has 2,742 active cases as of Wednesday, an increase of 29. There are 70 hospitalizations, up one, and nine people are now receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital. The zone has had 144 deaths linked to the virus, including one reported in the past day – a woman in her sixties on May 10.

Province-wide, Alberta reported another 1,799 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday out of 15,534 test results for a positivity rate of 10.2 per cent.

Across the province, there are now 24,962 active cases, down 36, and 186,550 recovered cases, up 1,931.

There were 426 new variant cases of concern identified over the past 24 hours. Variants now make up 34.7 per cent (8,660) of Alberta’s active cases.

There are now 737 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, an increase of 32 from Tuesday. 169 are in the ICU, an increase of six, and there have been four more deaths linked to the virus bringing the province’s total to 2,223.

Alberta delivered 1,975,341 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of Tuesday leaving the province in position to deliver its two-millionth dose today.
