May 3, 2021 | 3:19 PM

NOTE: Alberta has now opted out of Wednesday’s test of the Alert Ready system.

A test of the National Public Alerting System will take place later this week.

On Wednesday, May 5, Canadians in certain parts of the province will receive a notification on their phones, television, over the radio and other compatible mobile devices connected to a long-term evolution (LTE) or a newer wireless network (5G).

The system is used to notify Canadians of emergencies such as natural disasters and Amber Alerts.

Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Nunavut will not be a part of Wednesday’s test.

Canadians who do receive a test alert will be notified that it’s a test and will not have to take any action.

For Alberta, the test will happen at 1:55 p.m.

For a wireless device to receive an alert, it must be:

  • Connected to an LTE wireless or newer wireless network (5G) at the time the test is issued
  • Capable of receiving wireless public alerts
  • Equipped with a recent Canadian version of its operating software

If a mobile device meets those conditions, but does not receive a test message, Canadians should contact their wireless service provider.

More information about test alerts is here.
