Rise in Red Deer’s active cases slows over last week

Red Deer’s record active caseload of COVID-19 cases continues rising, though not at quite a hot pace.

The number of active cases in the city is now 733, up six from Friday. In the last week, the active caseload has risen just over 19 per cent. The week prior, the increase was over 57 per cent.

Conversely, recoveries over the last week have gone up nine per cent, in comparison to just more than 4.5 per cent the week prior.

However, the record high has increased every day since April 24.

There have now been 3,611 recoveries, an increase of 75, as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 81 to 4,380. The number of deaths in Red Deer linked to COVID-19 is 36, with none reported today and the most recent reported April 15.

Over the last seven days, Red Deer has added 430 cases, or up 10.8 per cent. The week prior’s (April 17-24) increase was 10.4 per cent. The week before that (April 10-17) saw a jump of 7.9 per cent.

Meantime, Alberta confirmed 2,433 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday — an all-time high for the province — for a total of 193,167 since the pandemic began.

The one-day total is out of 20,457 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of ~11.9 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is 22,504, up 676, while recoveries are up to 168-580.

There are 646 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, down three from Friday, including 152 in intensive care, the same as yesterday.

One additional COVID-19 death was reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total as of Saturday to 2,083.

VARIANTS

On Saturday, the province added 1,743 variant cases (included in the overall one-day total). There are 13,986 active variant cases, up 546. That means 62.1 per cent of all active COVID-19 cases in the province are variants of concern, up 05 per cent from yesterday.

In the last day, one more death from variants was recorded for a total of 86. Those are included in the overall and one-day death toll.

A total of 3,825 cases have been identified in Central Zone, all but 68 of them the B.1.1.9 variant. The remainder are the P.1 variant.

Alberta has administered 1,597,666 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of April 30. A total of 299,929 Albertans have been fully vaccinated.

The Central Zone has 2,542 active cases as of Saturday, an increase of 117. There are 51 hospitalizations, down three, and eight people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the same as yesterday. The zone has had 135 deaths as a result of COVID-19, none of which were reported today.

Over the last seven days, Central Zone has added 1,565 cases and 1,124 recoveries, with the active caseload going from 2,105 to 2,542.

Hospitalizations have gone up from 49 to 51, while the number of patients in ICU at Red Deer Regional has gone from five to eight.
