Alberta records second straight day of 2,000+ new COVID-19 cases

Alberta added 2,007 new cases of COVID-19 Friday, the second straight day with over 2,000.

With 18,955 tests done, the one-day positivity rate is ~10.6 per cent, and the active case count is up 443 to 21,828, another all-time high.

Of today’s new cases, 989 are variants of concern, meaning 61.6 per cent of all active cases are variants, down about 1.5 percentage points.

There are now 13,440 active variant cases, down 20 in the past day.

Sadly, Alberta Health is also reporting seven new deaths, giving the province a total of 2,082 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

Details of the latest fatalities are as follows:

· Date of death: April 5: A male in his 30s in North Zone. There are no known comorbidities at this time.

· Date of death: April 11. A male in his 50s in Calgary Zone. There are no known comorbidities at this time.

· Date of death: April 28. A male in his 80s in Central Zone. The case included comorbidities.

· Date of death: April 28. A male in his 80s in Central Zone. The case included comorbidities.

· April 28. A male in his 90s in North Zone. The case included comorbidities.

· April 28. A female in her 80s in Calgary Zone. The case included comorbidities.

· April 28. A male in his 80s in Calgary Zone. The case included comorbidities.

There are now 649 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, up 17, including 152 in intensive care, up one.

Red Deer now has a record 727 active cases of COVID-19, up five from Thursday.

The total number of cases in Red Deer is now 4,299 since the pandemic began, up 54 from Thursday. Recoveries went up 50 to 3,536. There have been 36 deaths, and none reported since April 15.

The province did not offer recovery, death or total case numbers for municipalities on Friday.

Active cases across Central Zone as of Friday:

Red Deer County: 175 (-1)

Sylvan Lake: 101 (+7)

Lacombe County: 140 (+7)

City of Lacombe: 155 (-2)

Ponoka County: 143 (-5)

Clearwater County: 70 (-3)

Brazeau County: 81 (+2)

Mountain View County: 87 (-8)

Olds: 110 (+3)

Kneehill County: 46 (+3)

County of Stettler: 74 (+3)

The Central Zone has 2,425 active cases, up 30 from Thursday. The zone has 54 people in hospital, down one, and eight people are in the ICU at Red Deer Regional Hospital, up one. The zone has had 135 deaths, two of which were reported today.

There have been 3,582 variant cases in Central Zone, all but 39 of which have been the B.1.1.7 version. The remainder are the P.1 variant. There are 1,650 active variant cases in the zone, and eight people have died from a variant in the zone.
