Province approves Hunting Hills modernization and addition

Two Red Deer school projects are among fourteen to receive funding through the latest provincial budget.

The government is providing $268 million for school construction in the province, including new schools in Calgary, Camrose, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Manning and Red Deer, five modernizations or additions, two school replacement projects and a school ownership solution.

One of the projects getting funding is the top capital priority for Red Deer Public Schools – the modernization and addition at Hunting Hills High School.

“This project has been at the top of our list and it’s an important need that must be addressed,” says Board Chair Nicole Buchanan, who thanked the province for the funding.

The modernization will address issues with the school’s roof, mechanical and electrical issues and other functional concerns, including the building’s envelope.

“While not impacting students directly, Alberta Infrastructure is acutely aware of issues facing the building and the need for repairs to reduce further issues,” said Della Ruston, Associate Superintendent, System Services.

The addition will help Hunting Hills, which opened in 1994, accommodate 200 more students. The scope, timing and specific budget for the project have yet to be announced.

Also announced Tuesday was funding for a new middle school (grades 6 to 9) for Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools approved in 2019.
