Mar 5, 2021 | 10:16 PM

The Red Deer Rebels offence came up empty in a 2-0 road loss to the Calgary Hitmen in Western Hockey League action Friday night.

The game was played at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex at the Tsuut’ina Nation, the Hitmen’s temporary home for this season.

The Rebels fell to 0-2-1 on the season while the Hitmen improved to 1-0-0.

Sean Tschigerl opened the scoring in this game for the Hitmen when he sprung from the penalty box, took a bank pass from Riley Stotts and beat Rebels goalie Ethan Anders for a breakaway goal 14:30 into period one.

Calgary expanded their lead to 2-0 at the 4:14 mark of period two on a goal Anders would love to have back. Tyson Galloway had the puck deep in his own end for Calgary when his long stretch pass missed the mark, bounced off the boards, trickled all the way towards the Rebels net and past Anders for a goal from 200 feet away. For Gallaway it was his first career WHL goal.

Neither team found the back of the net in the third period as Peters would turn aside all 27 Rebels shots on goal to earn the victory for the Hitmen and his first WHL shutout.

Anders finished with 29 saves on the night.

Red Deer was 0-for-4 on the power play while the Hitmen were 0-for-2.

Peters earned first star honours on the night with his shutout performance, Tschigerl was named second star and Rebels centre Ben King got the nod as the game’s third star.

Earlier on Friday, Jayden Grubbe was named Rebels captain for the 2020-21 season and will wear the ‘C’ as Arshdeep Bains, Ben King, Chris Douglas, Josh Tarzwell, and Zak Smith share Alternate Captain duties.

The Rebels and Hitmen battle again Saturday night at the Westerner Park Centrium. Game time is at 6 p.m. with the radio broadcast on 106.7 REWIND Radio starting at 5:50 p.m.
