City of Red Deer recreation facilities to remain closed

Mar 3, 2021 | 1:11 PM

Following the provincial government’s latest announcement this week regarding public health restrictions, The City of Red Deer says its recreation and culture facilities will remain closed for general public use.

City officials say current restrictions do not allow public swimming, lane swimming, fitness or aquatic activities (outside of low intensity), sport play or competition.

“We know citizens are anxiously awaiting a return to our facilities, and we are also eagerly awaiting that day,” said Barb McKee, Recreation Superintendent. “With access to our facilities limited, we are working on some new, exciting opportunities for Red Deerians to participate in recreation activities.”

The City will be launching an at-home fitness program in the coming weeks, saying that a variety of classes will be offered weekly, with something for everyone including cardio, gentle fitness, family-friendly fitness, strength training and yoga.

“We are really excited to offer virtual programming to the community,” said McKee. “With something for all ages and abilities, these classes are a safe, accessible and affordable way for citizens to revisit and explore fitness from the comfort of their own homes.”

The City of Red Deer will also be offering the opportunity for households to rent specific amenities at a “deeply discounted rate.” Available amenities include dry space (field house, gym and indoor soccer spaces), pool (Michener Aquatic Centre dive tank, lane pool and warm pool), and ice at the Collicutt Centre, Servus Arena, Kinsmen Community Arenas and G.H. Dawe Community Centre.

These household facility rentals will be booked through an Activity Reservation on Look n’ Book. Times will vary as these bookings are being coordinated around existing facility rentals by user groups. All participants must reside in the same household.

Residents are asked to check The City’s website for updates.
