Deadline Feb. 8 for Senior, Jr. B and C seasons

Hockey Alberta cancels remainder of AAA and AA seasons

Feb 2, 2021 | 9:19 PM

Hockey Alberta has cancelled AAA and AA regular league play for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.

The decision came Tuesday afternoon on the heels of the provincial government’s multi-phase plan for reopening from COVID-19 restrictions announced last Friday. Under the plan the earliest hockey could have returned would have been March 1.

“Hockey Alberta is disappointed by the Government’s announcement,” the organization said in a statement. “Our senior leadership team has been involved in ongoing discussions on what a safe and inclusive relaunch plan could look like for our sport.”

Hockey Alberta says it continues to focus on working with its members to explore all options for a spring development season when step two of the province’s plan comes into effect.

They also say they’ll be working closely with those organizations that have access to facilities and/or have players interested in playing to ensure that those who are interested in playing can have that opportunity, when our sport is allowed back on the ice.

Hockey Alberta says it will continue working with government and health officials to “develop a relaunch plan that allows for hockey activities and keeps our youth active for their physical and mental well-being.”

A return-to-play decision for Junior B, C, and Female and Senior leagues in the province will be made by February 8.
