Ice sculptures bring buzz to downtown Red Deer

Jan 26, 2021 | 5:20 PM

People strolling through downtown Red Deer have something new and fresh to feast their eyes on with three new ice sculptures commissioned by the Downtown Business Association (DBA).

It’s not a secret that COVID-19 and public health restrictions have affected local businesses, but the DBA wants people to know it’s ok to go and shop and spend time downtown safely.

“We thought ice sculpture would be a great way to draw and gain foot traffic to the downtown at a time when shopping local is key to the success of downtown,” said Executive Director Amanda Gould.

“The intention is to get to walk and see all three sculptures, passing restaurants and shops on the way that visitors may not know even existed till now. Hopefully, this will encourage visitors to try something new, the next time they’re looking for a special gift or uniquely special restaurants.”

The three sculptures are located at the Ross Street Patio near the Cenotaph, and outside La Casa Pergola and Original Joe’s restaurants.

One sculpture is of a bumblebee sitting on top of the word “kind,” the La Casa Pergola location has a couple of animal busts and the sculpture outside Original Joe’s will be finished on Wednesday.

The DBA commissioned Mark Berge from the Ice on Whyte festival in Edmonton to create the sculptures.
