Vehicles thieves allegedly open fire on oilfield workers on Sunchild Road

Dec 16, 2020 | 9:03 PM

On December 12, the Rocky Mountain House RCMP were called to the theft of a truck at a lease site on the Sunchild Road north of Highway 11.

The complainants told RCMP that the four suspects who’d stolen the vehicle had also fired multiple rounds from a rifle at them while they used a nearby building as cover.

The operator on the site was said to have initially chased the thieves as they tried to leave with the stolen vehicle when he spotted them.

The suspects ended up driving into the ditch and got stuck, at which point the suspects allegedly opened fire on the victims.

There were no injuries reported. The two vehicles fled and the RCMP were called.

Corporal Laurel Scott, Alberta RCMP Media Relations, noted that additional neighbouring detachments were called in from Breton and Drayton Valley along with police dogs and the emergency response teams.

She stated that they flooded the area with members in an attempt to apprehend the individuals.

The stolen vehicle was recovered along with two of the four suspects.

No charges have been laid at this time.
