Embracing The Spirit

“Sofia Celebrates Christmas” goes virtual this year

COVID-19 may not permit in-home visits this holiday season, but that hasn’t dampered the festive spirits of two Red Deer men who have once again opened their home, albeit virtually, to view their Christmas decorations.

“Sofia Celebrates Christmas” showcases 129 beautifully decorated trees for the community to enjoy.

Though in-person tours of the home on Comfort Close in Clearview Meadows are normally offered each year, this year Vince Jackman and Tom Kereluk have posted several videos of their Christmas trees on Facebook – adapting to current public health protocols.

“We knew it was the right thing to do but wanted to make sure that we were still able to offer a chance for people to view the trees,” they explain. “Before the shutdown, we had planned to have people make appointments and wear masks, and sanitize to come to the house,” the men noted. “And for our big party where we have over a hundred people attend for an evening of food, wine, and homemade cheese cakes, we were going to split the party over six weeks but cancelled those due to restrictions.”

The duo admits they have some favorites that are a staple each year.

“And we have some new ones that we have brought to life and we have more ideas for next year,” they exclaim. “Planning starts right after Christmas with picking up Boxing Day items and new trees lights.”

Jackman and Kereluk say they do this annually because they love Christmas and love supporting charities such as the Central Alberta Humane Society – an organization they will collect donations for if anyone viewing their videos wishes to contribute.

“I have been involved with the shelter for the past seven years,” says Jackman. “We just want to make sure everyone stays safe this holiday season. But remember, we still need to have the Christmas spirt.”
