Alberta records 13 new COVID-19 deaths, active cases decline

Alberta Health identified 1,590 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday.

With 1,666 recoveries, this marks the second straight day of a decline in active cases. Today’s drop was 89 to 20,072, after it declined by two yesterday.

Sadly, 13 more deaths were reported Saturday taking the provincial toll to 697.

There are 681 Albertans in hospital, down by three, and 128 in ICU, up by five.

With 20,227 tests done in the last day, that gives Alberta a one-day positivity rate of 7.9 per cent, down from Friday’s 8.3 per cent.

Alberta active cases count remains the highest in the country, with the next closed being Ontario at 16,221 and Quebec with 16,176.*

Alberta also has the highest rate of active cases per 100,000 people at 459. Manitoba’s rate is 411, Quebec is at 191 and Ontario’s is 111. British Columbia is at 209 and Saskatchewan’s rate is 349.

In Red Deer, cases shot up by 30 to 977, with active cases edging upward by two to 410.

Central Zone has now confirmed 4,377 cases of COVID-19, a one-day jump of 130. The zone has 1,522 active cases, up by 20. There are 59 people in hospital, up by one, and four in ICU, down by one.

The zone also recorded one new death on Saturday for a total of 24. The latest, a female in her 60s, was confirmed on Dec. 6, but updated in the provincial system today.
