November is Family Violence Prevention Month in Blackfalds

Nov 13, 2020 | 10:25 AM

In a continued effort to support families within the community, Town Council proclaimed November to be Family Violence Prevention Month in Blackfalds during a recent regular council meeting on November 10.

“Town council continues to work with local agencies and the RCMP to find ways to protect everyone in Blackfalds and surrounding areas. Family Violence Prevention Month is one such opportunity,” explained Mayor Richard Poole. “We hope that if you know of or are a victim of family violence, you reach out to the RCMP or FCSS for assistance. Please know that you are important, your family is important, and safety is only a telephone call away.”

Blackfalds has been involved with Family Violence Prevention Month since 2017 and continues to support the cause and recognize the impact that family violence has on our residents and surrounding communities.

The Government of Alberta explains that the prevention of family violence is especially important during natural disasters, public health crises, and economic downturns, as family violence increases. Now more than ever, it is crucial to know where you can turn to if you are experiencing family violence during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Family Violence Prevention Month provides us with an opportunity to open the conversation and provide supports for people. The pandemic heightens the challenges currently facing our families and the community,” FCSS Manager Sue Bornn reiterates. “Call the Family Violence Info Line at 310-1818 to get help anonymously and learn #WhereToTurn and access available resources.”

The Town of Blackfalds continues to stay engaged with Regional Vision for Non-Violence Coalition with the 16 other regional community partners, including Benalto, Bentley, Bowden, Caroline, Clive, Delburne, Eckville, Elnora, Innisfail, Lacombe, Penhold, Rimbey, Rocky Mountain House, Stettler, and Sylvan Lake.

If you or someone you know is involved with family violence, please know there are many resources available in Blackfalds and the surrounding areas, including the Family Violence Info Line (310-1818), emergency shelters, and more.

For more information or learn more about the resources available, please contact the Blackfalds FCSS office at 403.600.9066, visit the Regional Vision for Non Violence website, or learn more on the province’s site.
