Oct 1, 2020 | 10:41 AM

A special celebration is being held in Red Deer this weekend in honour of a local WWII Veteran.

Members of Red Deer Emergency Services, Red Deer RCMP, Municipal Policing Services and 41 Canadian Brigade Group (Army Reserve) will be conducting a parade involving emergency and military vehicles on Saturday, October 3 at the Timberstone Mews (42 Timberstone Way).

The parade is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:00 a.m.

The Department of National Defence says the parade is being held to celebrate the 97th birthday of Trooper (Retired) Tommy Baker.

Trooper Baker served with the “Calgary Tanks” (now The King’s Own Calgary Regiment) in both Italy and Northwest Europe during the War. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be conducted as a parade of vehicles passing Trooper Baker’s residence.

Officials say all participants will practice Force Health Protection Measures in accordance with public health guidelines and disruption to local traffic will be minimal.
