RCMP investigating pedestrian hit and run in Ponoka

Sep 11, 2020 | 1:26 PM

An RCMP investigation is underway into an alleged hit and run on a pedestrian Thursday afternoon in Ponoka.

Cpl. Laurel Scott with RCMP K Division says members were dispatched at 4:10 p.m. to the scene of the incident.

Scott says a male was taken to hospital with injuries but later released.

The alleged hit and run occurred while two groups of people were gathered in the area for separate protests.

The first group had gathered at around 2 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 2A and 53. Members of the group were seen holding signs promoting the website unifythepeople.ca which promotes Alberta sovereignty among other things.

The other group gathered not far away was Black and Indigenous Alliance Alberta (BIAA). Kisha Daniels with the group tells rdnewsNOW they’ve been holding protests in Ponoka and Wetaskiwin for the past seven weeks.

“Black and Indigenous Alliance Alberta was created out of the need for protest,” she explains, alluding to the death of George Floyd in Minnesota at the hands of police. “We were approached by private citizens in Wetaskiwin, Lacombe and Ponoka to come and actively protest.”

Daniels says their protest started at about 3:30 p.m. It was at around 4:00 p.m. when she says a vehicle was driven towards their group and the hit and run took place.

RCMP members were already at the scene when the alleged incident took place. Daniels says she had informed them ahead of time of the potential for a confrontation, based on what she’d seen on social media.

Black and Indigenous Alliance Alberta plans to hold a press conference Monday outside the Ponoka RCMP Detachment to further discuss the incident.
