ASIRT investigating in custody injury involving Ponoka RCMP

Sep 11, 2020 | 9:45 PM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over the investigation into an in custody serious injury sustained while a suspect was detained by Ponoka RCMP.

Following a disturbance complaint, police say, a 59-year-old male was arrested by RCMP and lodged in the local detachment’s cells.

While there, it was recognized that he was in medical distress. EMS attended and the male was taken to hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Because this took place while the male was in RCMP custody, the investigation into the cause was reported to the Director of Law Enforcement, who then referred the matter to ASIRT.

“The RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and it’s important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable,” an RCMP media release states.

“The RCMP’s internal review process, in conjunction with the ASIRT process, has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident.”

The RCMP say they will not be commenting any further on this investigation.
