Renos back underway at Stettler Hospital and Care Centre

Renovations are set to continue at the Stettler Hospital and Care Centre.

Alberta Health Services says the third phase of renos will begin Friday, July 24, four months later than expected due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Phase Three includes a major reconfiguration of the emergency room and is costing $9.3 million. Phases one and two included construction of a new pharmacy, gift shop relocation, and two new labour and delivery suites.

“As the project involves having to move some departments and services, AHS has robust plans in place to ensure inpatient beds will not be impacted, so our healthcare teams can continue to focus on dealing with the impact of COVID-19,” an AHS media release states.

“Our project teams, contractors, and vendors all have strict fit for work screening and Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) protocols in place. Once boarding goes up, these teams will have very little physical contact with other parts of the hospital.”

In the meantime, a temporary emergency department will be established in another part of the hospital to allow for renovations to take place in the current emergency area.

There will be no access to the emergency room through the ambulance bay, so patients and visitors must go through the hospital’s main entrance to be directed to to that area.

“Once complete, the new ED will be completely renovated to improve visibility, accessibility, privacy, security, workflow and patient care.”

Funding for the multi-phase project is from the Government of Alberta’s Infrastructure and Maintenance Program, while the Stettler Health Services Foundation has committed to raising another $650,000 to support renovations.
