Brazeau County Council

Regionalization initiative is a no for Brazeau County

Brazeau County Council is making it known that they do not support a regionalization initiative that has gained support from other municipalities, including the Town of Drayton Valley.

Last week, Council responded to a letter that the Town recently sent to the Minister of Municipal Affairs regarding its support for the initiative. Council said the Town “neglected” to send the letter to the County prior to sending it to the Minister. Council then directed staff to write a letter strongly opposing regionalization and/or amalgamation in Alberta and have Council review it before sending it to the Premier and other parties, including the Town.

The County says they feel neither regionalization, which would create another level of government, nor the amalgamation of local governments into one are in the best interest of County ratepayers.

In addition to the letter of opposition, Council also directed Administration to research other instances of amalgamation and regionalization and how they worked in order to build their case against either option. Brazeau County says this would include any cost-sharing numbers currently available.
