The long-time dream of building a skate park for the youth of Springbrook has received a significant boost from Red Deer County council today.

On Tuesday, council approved a funding request of $179,550 from the Springbrook Community Skatepark Committee for the development of a concrete park and related amenities in the hamlet.

According to County officials, the Springbrook Community Skatepark Committee has worked toward the creation of a permanent concrete skateboard park within the Hamlet of Springbrook since 2012.

However, completing final fundraising for the project has said to become more difficult as a result of current economic pressures, and the COVID-19 pandemic reducing the amount of financial contributions available.

Council has previously granted approval for a lease of 1.25 acres of County owned land for use as a skateboard park, $55,000 for concept design and $250,000 in construction funding. The project total is $606,000 plus GST and the group has raised a total of $472,500. However, the amount secured is said to include a Community Facility Enhancement Program grant of $125,000 which must be used in 2020.

It’s noted that $15,000 of the Committee’s funding request is for benches, picnic tables, and garbage and recycling bins to enhance the use of the area and to provide spaces for community members to gather when the facility is complete.

As a result, the committee would like to complete the project as scheduled in summer of 2020 in order to guarantee use of the Community Facility Enhancement Grant.

Previously, Red Deer County has provided capital investment towards several other municipal Skateboard parks.

Project funding will come from the County’s Municipal Reserve Account, with the 2020 Budget to be amended accordingly.
