FRIDAY UPDATE

Alberta with more than 500 active COVID-19 cases

Jun 19, 2020 | 3:55 PM

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Alberta is back above the 500-mark.

The province confirmed 46 new cases of the virus on Friday out of about 9,000 tests done over the past 24 hours.

The number of active cases in Alberta is now 512. That’s 23 more than Thursday and 173 more than the 339 active cases that were reported back on June 5.

“It means that the virus is still here and it isn’t going anywhere. It also means that, even if we are feeling healthy and symptom-free, we all need to continue operating as though we could spread the virus to others and could catch it from those around us,” Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, said Friday.

Hinshaw said the increase was expected as more people have gone back to work and are interacting with others.

No new deaths from COVID-19 were reported on Friday as Alberta’s total remains 152.

There are 39 Albertans currently in hospital because of the virus. Six of them are in intensive care.

The number of active cases in the Central Zone has risen by one to a total of three.

There remains one active case in the city of Red Deer and no other active cases in the immediate surrounding area.
