Suspect in custody after fleeing from Red Deer Mounties

A man was arrested Thursday afternoon after fleeing from police and driving dangerously through several neighbourhoods in Red Deer.

It was shortly after 1 p.m. when Red Deer RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. However, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed.

A police helicopter was used to track the vehicle as it sped through several neighbourhoods in southeast Red Deer and on 40 Avenue. A tire deflation device was used to slow the vehicle.

The driver abandoned the vehicle in the McKenzie Trails area and fled on foot before entering the Red Deer River. Members and Police Dog Services entered the river and brought the driver to shore.

A 28-year-old male from Red Deer was arrested for flight from police, dangerous driving, obstruction, possession of stolen property, and various breaches. Additional charges are pending.
