Red Deer shopping malls open their doors

May 14, 2020 | 3:05 PM

Red Deer’s two largest shopping centres have opened their doors for Stage 1 of Alberta’s phased relaunch during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

At Bower Place, some stores are now open for business. However, some tenants may be operating on reduced hours, or are open only on select days of the week.

It is suggested that shoppers check with the individual tenant directly, or call Guest Services at 403-342-5240, prior to visiting.

Operating hours at Bower Place are currently listed as Monday – Saturday 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., and Sunday’s and holidays 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

According to the mall’s website, guests will notice a number of important changes to adhere to current health regulations, including reduced entrance points to the north and northeast entrances, floor decals throughout the shopping centre to encourage social distancing, reduced stalls and sink access in public washrooms and replacing hand dryers with a paper option, and family washrooms limited to one family at a time.

Food court tenants have spaced out queuing lines, no serving trays will be circulated and seating areas have been reduced. Elevators will have a limit of two passengers at a time and escalators will be limited to a minimal number of passengers. Larger retail tenants will have line up queues to manage customer numbers, and security will be on site seven days per week, 24 hours per day.

Shoppers will also find enhanced sanitation and frequency of cleaning from the housekeeping team, curbside pickup stalls will be offered from participating stores to offer vehicle delivery, customer parking is limited to the north, northeast and west parking lots, sanitization stations are located throughout the shopping centre, and sanitary stations will be at all digital directories.

Guests are being asked to adhere to all signage within the mall, sanitize hands upon entry, wash hands as often as necessary, maintain a social distance of over six feet, not visit if you are symptomatic, use credit or debit cards, follow line up queues accordingly, and visitation to the administration office by appointment only.

At Parkland Mall, General Manager Greg Beatson says they are committed to delivering the highest standards of safety for the community.

“In keeping with this commitment, we have implemented new cleaning protocols, physical distancing measures and safety practices,” he explains. “The mall will reopen on May 14 with modified operating hours of Monday to Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Retail stores will open gradually with curbside pickup available for select stores.”
