Red Deer RCMP asks cyclists to know and follow the rules of the road
As the weather warms up and winter debris is swept from the streets, Red Deer RCMP are reminding cyclists to strap on their helmets and obey the rules of the road.
“We’re seeing a real increase in bicycle traffic in the city amidst the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Cst. Derek Turner with the Red Deer RCMP Community Policing section. “Cycling is a great way for people to stay active and spend time with friends and family during the pandemic. But the increased number of bikes on our roads and trails also increases the potential for accidents and injuries, especially if those people aren’t following the rules.”
Recently, Red Deer RCMP say they have observed a large number of cyclists who are unaware of, or who fail to follow traffic laws.
“Riders have been observed ignoring traffic signs, cycling against the flow of oncoming traffic, and failing to signal their turns,” said Cst. Turner. “Cyclists have a responsibility to know and follow the rules that apply to them and many of the traffic rules for vehicle drivers also apply to cyclists.”
