Moving Forward

Market on Main becoming Market on the Oval

Every Thursday between June 25 to August 27, the Town of Rocky Mountain House will be hosting Market on Main. Due to the current health crisis, however, the event will be quite different than what people remember.

This year the market will be held at the Oval Track at Curtis Field, right across from the Christenson Sports and Wellness Centre.

The location was chosen due to it being fenced in, making it easier to control the number of people inside, and being a circular track it can more easily allow for one way traffic.

Vendors will be lined up on the outside of the track with at least two metre spacing between them, allowing for roughly 54 stalls to sell their various goods.

In the past vendors were charged $25 a day or $200 for ten days, given this year’s circumstances, council chose to reduce that fee to $20 a day or $150 for ten.

Attendees will be expected to line up on the west side of the oval, while town staff control the flow of visitors, allowing only 50 in at a time.

Director of Planning and Community Development Dean Schweder mentioned that as of now it is the number they will be limiting it to, but could change in the future.

Food trucks will be located outside of the track in the Christenson Sports and Wellness parking lot to help mitigate wait times and allow people to eat without having to get inside first.

Music is also intended to be set up near the entrance, providing additional entertainment while waiting outside and shopping inside.

“One of the biggest issues we see, is people could arrive and end up waiting an hour,” Schweder said later stating it’s just the way things are now.

Staff and Community Peace Officers will be enforcing social distancing rules in and outside of the event.

Town Councillors expressed approval of the idea, even mentioning that they could see coming back to the location again in later years given its proximity to the green space, skate park and soon to be splash park.
