Breton, Thorsby, and Drayton Valley RCMP assist in nabbing wanted male after 5-hour chase

The Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit arrested a man last week in Brazeau County after a lengthy police chase.

On April 30, the Unit acted on information that led them to the location of a man who was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants, including possession of a prohibited firearm.

The male was located at a residence and the assistance of Breton RCMP, RCMP Air Services, and Police Dog Services was requested.

The male managed to flee the residence on an ATV, but his location was determined and tracked by a police helicopter.

The male drove the ATV dangerously until he reached a deep river, where he then ditched the ATV and continued on foot. A chase ensued and RCMP members were called in from Breton, Thorsby, and Drayton Valley to assist, along with Police Dog Services.

After a 5 hour chase, Police Dog Services finally caught and arrested the man in a forested area.

30-year-old Derek Fernand Lavoie is facing 10 new criminal charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, four counts of fail to comply with a release condition, and resist arrest.

A judicial interim hearing was held and Lavoie remains in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 21, 2020, in Leduc Provincial Court.

Before his arrest, Lavoie had been on the RCMP’s Wanted Wednesday list for several weeks.
