Ponoka residents invited to help clean up their town

May 4, 2020 | 3:31 PM

Ponoka residents are invited to roll up their sleeves and help beautify their town by participating in the following events during the month of May.

Community Clean Up May 11 – 15

Ponoka’s annual Community Clean Up event is back with some changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents are encouraged to pitch in and help clean up our community after the long winter months with some restrictions this year to keep everyone safe and comply with provincial public health requirements and directives. Volunteers who help with the Community Clean Up are asked to:

– Only work with members of your own household and stay within your neighbourhood while participating in the Community Clean Up event

– Keep a distance of at least two metres (six feet) from others who are not members of your household

– Wear gloves and cloth masks when picking up trash and avoid touching your face

– Stay home and away from others if you are feeling ill

All garbage picked up during the event must be placed in bags and can be disposed of with your Grey Cart waste or recycling for regular curbside pickup. If your Grey Cart is full, the Town’s Waste Transfer Station will accept Community Clean Up waste at no fee on May 12 and 14. The Waste Transfer Station is located on 46 St. just outside the northeast Town limits on the south side of the road.

Annual Back Alley Yard Waste Pickup

On Tuesday, May 19, Town crews will begin their annual back alley collection of compostable yard waste. Public Works crews will make one pass down each back alley in Ponoka to collect yard waste (grass clippings, leaves, weeds, branches less than three feet) in excess of what will fit into your Green Cart.

Please place any compostable yard waste that you would like picked up in a pile on your property in your back alley no later than May 19. Please do not bag the yard waste as it will contaminate the compost pile at the Waste Transfer Station and will have to be sent to the landfill. If you do not have a back alley, place your yard waste at the front of your property. Items that will not be picked up include: rocks, construction material, wood, household waste and pet excrement.

Ponoka residents are also welcome to bring compostable yard waste free of charge to the Town of Ponoka Waste Transfer Station. The Waste Transfer Station only accepts compostable vegetation such as tree branches, leaves and grass clippings – not kitchen waste. Kitchen waste can only be composted through the curbside Green Cart program and is not accepted at the Waste Transfer Station as the facility is not set up to compost that type of material.

Green Cart Weekly Collection Starts May 6

Ponoka residents can start rolling out their Green Carts to the curb every week on their scheduled collection day beginning on May 6 to dispose of compostable yard waste and grass clippings in addition to regular kitchen scraps during the spring, summer and fall. The Green Cart schedule will revert to biweekly pickup after October 30.

By working together and using our Green Carts to compost yard waste and kitchen scraps, we can help reduce the amount of waste Ponoka sends to the landfill.
