WATCH: Province gives northern Alberta flooding update

Apr 28, 2020 | 1:20 PM

Environment and Parks Minister Jason Nixon will be joined by local and emergency officials to provide an update on the flooding situation in northern Alberta.

A news conference is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. You can watch it below.

Also scheduled to speak at the news conference are:

  • Don Scott, mayor, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo
  • Josh Knelson, reeve, Mackenzie County
  • Colleen Walford, river forecaster, Environment and Parks
  • Shane Schreiber, managing director, Alberta Emergency Management Agency

Premier Jason Kenney says he has toured the damage caused by flooding in Fort McMurray and the province is ready to help.

The city’s entire downtown is under an evacuation order due to high water caused by spring ice breakup on the Athabasca and Clearwater rivers.

More than five-thousand people have registered at two evacuation centres and that number is expected to grow, because there are about 12-thousand people living in the areas being cleared.

A second state of local emergency is in effect on top of one declared last month because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
