129th annual Westerner Days officially cancelled

Apr 24, 2020 | 11:10 AM

The 2020 edition of Westerner Days is officially cancelled.

Westerner Park made the announcement Friday morning after Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, said Thursday that no summer festivals would be permitted to operate this year.

“We know these are necessary measures to ensure the health and safety of our entire community,” says Mike Olesen, Chief Executive Officer, Westerner Park. “Although this is our top priority, it doesn’t make the announcement any easier. This will have far-reaching effects on our community, partners, vendors, and organization.”

He adds that staff and volunteers, of which there are at least 300 of each every year, are heavy-hearted about the news.

This year’s fair was going to be new and improved, he points out, with more concerts, physical changes to the layout, additional rides, and a theme of ‘Central Alberta’s Largest Summer Celebration.’

“We exist for the community’s ability to celebrate and to gather. It’s the community’s event and we feel we have a responsibility to the community to find ways to do that,” he adds. “So now how do we get creative and work with the community in engaging them in that way? We’re working on it.”

The local economic impact of Westerner Days typically sees an injection of approximately $7 million each year. Of that, around $5 million is spent by visitors, exhibitors and contractors in the Red Deer area.

“We are Central Alberta’s largest summer celebration and know the Fair means a lot to our community,” says Janice Wing, President & Board Chair, Westerner Park. “As a non-profit agricultural society, Westerner Days is our largest annual event, made possible by our team of staff and volunteers and the support of our partners, sponsors and community. We know the impact of this will be felt by everyone.”

Those who have purchased RAD passes will be contacted later today with information about refunds.

The announcement from Hinshaw has also forced the cancellation of, among other things, Calgary Stampede, Edmonton’s K-Days, and the Rocky Mountain Chuckwagon Association’s annual Battle of the Rockies which is held in Rocky Mountain House.
