Red Deer child care spaces reopening for core service workers

The province is in the process of reopening child care spaces in Red Deer to assist core service workers working through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lauren Armstrong, spokesperson for the Minister of Children’s Services, says six centres are reopening in Red Deer with 130 child care spaces.

“Some centres are taking this week to staff up and put in place sanitation measures in order to welcome children next week, so we are still awaiting the number of children filling the spaces,” she told rdnewsNOW. “We will continue to assess demand over the coming weeks and work with the Provincial Operations Centre to determine if locations or spaces need to be added.”

Armstrong says they aren’t able to share which child care centres are reopening as they want to ensure only eligible parents are using them. Eligible parents are being informed through their employer.

The provincial government announced on March 22 that they are working with child care providers to open up to 15,000 child care spaces to ensure child care is available for those providing services that Albertans rely on during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Child care centres are initially being chosen based on proximity to health-care facilities and will be reopened in a phased approach based on areas of need. The centres will be limited to 30 people, including staff, and will have to adhere to strict sanitization practices.

Licensed day homes can be open but are limited to six children, not including the operators’ own children.
