COVID-19 fallout

Town of Rocky Mountain House lays off 31 part-time and casual staff

Mar 20, 2020 | 4:24 PM

The Town of Rocky Mountain House has issued 31 layoff notices to part-time and casual employees.

Town officials say the layoffs due to the sudden reduction in services related to COVID-19 public health measures.

“Under the provincial Public Health Emergency, the public is prohibited from attending recreation facilities for the foreseeable future, including the Christenson Sports & Wellness Centre and the Credit Union Co-op Aquatic Centre,” town officials say in a release. “As a result, The Town of Rocky Mountain House had to make the difficult but fiscally responsible decision to temporarily lay off a percentage of its recreation staff.”

The Town says employees who are laid-off due to COVID-19 will be eligible for federal supports as announced earlier this week.

“Some staff members have been offered re-assignments within the Town organization, and others remain in the facilities to do essential work in the buildings.”

The Town of Rocky Mountain House says it is committed to the well-being of its employees, and that as the provincial situation evolves, administration is monitoring and re-evaluating on a regular basis to maintain our employment relationships with staff during this time.

Only part-time and casual recreation staff are affected by these layoffs. The Town of Rocky Mountain House continues to provide services to residents and businesses in all other departments.
