COVID-19 not affecting YQF, yet

Despite growing travel restrictions throughout the globe as a result of the coronavirus health pandemic, it’s business as usual, at least for now, at Red Deer Regional Airport (YQF).

Airport CEO Graham Ingham says YQF has yet to be impacted by COVID-19.

“But that’s not to say that we won’t in the future,” says Ingham. “The nature of our business is such that without a scheduled service, domestic or international, then we’re not seeing large numbers of people from around the province, the country, or the globe. So we’re relatively unaffected at this time.”

Ingham describes the situation at Red Deer’s airport as different from those that have scheduled air passenger service.

“Although it has its downsides as you know with having no passenger service, right now we seem to be fairly shielded from that type of thing,” he points out. “With respect to our tenants on the field, they may have some other thoughts on that, but for now, we’re business as usual. We’ve had no cases reported at the airport at this time.”

In the meantime, Ingham admits precautions are being taken like everyone else, in efforts to stay healthy.

“We’re just following exactly what either the province or the federal government is recommending for precautions,” he explains. “The basic stuff, you wash your hands, and don’t touch your face and those types of things. We keep a pretty close eye on what those recommendations are.”
