Mar 11, 2020 | 10:48 PM

The Red Deer Rebels closed out their two game road trip with a 6-2 win Wednesday night over the Swift Current Broncos.

Jaxsen Weibe opened up the scoring for the Rebels 8:36 into the first period, driving to the net and putting one past Issac Poulter to make it 1-0.

Just 44 seconds later, the Rebels made it 2-0 when Zak Smith found the back of the net for his 12th of the year. Blake Gustafson added the lone assist on the goal, giving him assists in three straight games.

Red Deer made it 3-0 with 6:15 left in the first period when Dallon Melin beat Poulter with an absolute laser after Keaton Sorensen slid the puck over to him.

Swift Current got on the board less than a minute later when Sergei Alkhimov beat Rebels goalie Byron Fancy to make it 3-1.

The Broncos made it 3-2 just over five minutes into period two as Hayden Ostir got his second point of the night and his 10th goal of the year.

The Rebels regained their two-goal lead after Ethan Sakowich scored a powerplay goal 9:52 into period two.

Red Deer didn’t wait long to run their lead back to three when Weibe added his second of the night just 50 seconds after Sakowich’s goal. Josh Tarzwell tallied an assist on the goal, giving him points in three straight.

The Rebels’ sixth goal came on the powerplay when Chris Douglas ripped a shot on net that went off the head of Poulter and Cameron Hausinger was able to push it in. Chase Leslie added his third assist of the night on the goal.

The third period was all zeros for both teams as the Rebels cruised to their 24th victory of the season.

The Rebels put 47 shots on Swift Current’s net while going 2-for-3 on the powerplay. Fancy stopped 22 shots at his end of the rink.

Red Deer plays again Saturday back at the Westerner Park Centrium when the Calgary Hitmen come to town. You can listen to that game live at 7 p.m. on 106.7 The Drive.
