Crown considering dangerous offender status for Eckville man over child sex crimes

The Crown will be taking the next several weeks to decide whether to pursue dangerous or long-term offender status for an Eckville man who admitted to committing sexual crimes against young children.

In Red Deer Provincial Court on Wednesday, the 35-year-old man appeared briefly through CCTV from the Calgary Remand Centre to learn that a psychiatric report on him has now been complete.

However, court heard Carolyn Ayre, a specialized Crown prosecutor from Calgary, will need the next six and-a-half weeks to decide whether to pursue dangerous or long-term offender status.

The man, whose name is under publication ban, pleaded guilty in October to more than two dozen of the 80 counts against him.

Previously, it was learned that over the course of about a decade, the man collected hundreds of photos and videos of himself sexually assaulting or molesting children between the ages of two and 10-years-old. Some of the images were uploaded to child pornography sites.

The case returns to court Apr. 27 where it’s anticipated Ayres will announce her intentions regarding the man’s offender status. Should she move forward, 10 dates have been set aside in October to conduct a hearing.

If the Crown decides otherwise, sentencing would take place on one of the October dates.
